Bloggers Quilt Festival Entry

The online festival slipped my mind until I saw Linda and Audrey's entries. They looked so lovely I had to post along with them. So here's my Spiderweb quilt.

Spiderweb string quilt

This quilt started with the vintage floral that make the background stars in the center. I drafted my own version of the Spiderweb block so I could play with the web layouts. By encircling the outer ring with a single color and including more shades of that color inside the webs they sparkle like jewels.  (The photo below shows the true colors of the quilt.)

Taking the vintage background as a sign I decided to applique a border, something I haven't done in years. What fun to make a beefy vine for the cardinals to sit on. Colors like no leaf ever added more joy. It's all machine applique. The vine is a tube; the leaves and birds were treated by Lara's method in Crafted Applique.

The quilt needed more {at least, to me} so there are rows of casually cut triangles in two sizes.

Then I started quilting: spiderwebs and spirals inside,

feathers, loops, and free motion doodles in the borders. Those loops were a blast. And very easy. I marked the midline so I'd close each loop in time and just went for it.

Thanks to Amy for again hosting and arranging all the details for this Bloggers Quilt Festival.

Enjoy the day, Ann

Strong quilts are so much fun. The uniform outeR ring really unifies it all. Lovely quilting too.

I'm always so fascinated by your process! There's always something to learn isn't there? Your quilt is gorgeous, almost dreamy, but with too much color to be the least bit serene! Thanks for the shout out.:) I've had a fondness for this show even with all its ups and downs. Lots of different styles represented every single year.

A beautiful quilt! I really love the vintage fabric that started you off down this track! And thanks for the shout out, I'm enjoying seeing all the different quilts this year.

the work involved in this is just outstanding....

I tried many ways to make the webs but this is the one that worked best, probably because of the printed background fabric. Thanks for writing.

Funny you should say that, Audrey. I'm equally fascinated by yours. Part of the reason blogs attract me is the ability to get a peak into someone else's thought process. The way people work is as interesting as their output. It's like a different mathematical proof - a new, equally valid way to do something.
Of course. I want to always credit my inspirations. And it's more fun to share.
I think I might like this year's format simply showing quilts. The categories must have been sho much work for Amy. Yikes. It's fun to see all these different quilts in one place. A quilt show in my pjs.

I had forgotten about it too, but it's nice to see that it has prompted people to share several of my recent favourites again, this once included.

That's very kind of you. I think this one turned out well, too They don't always live up to our imaginations, do they?

So kind of you, Maureen. I like this quilt, too but each time I see the photos I'm reminded I need to find a way to photograph large quilts in true colors. Guess I need to search for beauty shot locations. Ha.

Thanks, Robin.

The reasons you list are why I like this so well, too. My quilts don't always turn out as well as I expected/envisioned but this one is even better than I hope. Thanks for writing, Claire.

Oh, I'm glad you're going to post something, too. I think I like this year's arrangement with all the quilts together. It's just fun to see them and wander through like a physical quilt show. I will look for yours soon, Shasta.

Thanks, Kairie. It's one of my favorites. I'm glad this one is staying home with me.

Thanks, Janie. I hope you are still enjoying your time on the West Coast.

Thanks for inspiring me to link with the Bloggers Festival. I like the more casual format this year, too. It's easier to see everything together and seems friendlier.
The background fabric looks like something you'd have collected, too.

Thanks, Karen. Spiderwebs are a good way to use up scraps. I like that they are different than many of the other scrap quilts and that they are so casual. I do love to add borders.

How kind of you to write, Barb. Spiderwebs look harder than they are. I do love to make borders and think mine looks similar to the border of your quilt. I hope you had as much fun making yours as I had with mine.

That's the best part of this show, isn't it? A reprise of many favorites and some new charmers we missed the first time around. Plus, it's fun to read new blogs.

Ann said...

Thanks, liniecat. Using lots of different fabrics makes me happy.

Stunning scrappy quilt! I would have never thought to use that background..well done!

Ann said...

Thanks for writing. Scrap quilts are always my favorites.

I bought that fabric years ago because I loved it then never could find anywhere to use it. The almost medium value and busy print made choosing web fabric difficult but I like how it turned out. Thanks for writing.

Beautiful!!! Lots of work went into cutting and sewing all these little pieces.

Marie said...

Totally love this!

Ann said...

Thank you for writing. I don't know how much cutting; many were already small pieces from my scrap bag.

Thanks, Marie.
