July 2016 AHIQ Linkup

This difficult summer is coming to an end. While I still haven't found much time or even inclination to create, I did finish my Crafted Applique pillow using Lara's method.

Crafted Applique pillow with down insert

The applique holds up well on the selvedge background since it is also stitched about an eighth of an inch from the raw edges. It looks even better with a squishy down insert.

Pillow back with hidden zipper

Once again ChrissieD's tutorial helped create a deep hidden zipper on the back.  Her instructions are very clear and, because the zipper is installed first, it's one of the easiest ways I've found to close a pillow. Additionally, the deep placket makes the back more interesting; so many fabric choices. My previous pillow is here. Both of these were gifted away. Next time I'll make one for myself.

Have you been following Kaja's delightful lighthouse quilt this year? What a gloriously original quilt.

Enjoy the day, Ann

InLinkz removed because it was hacked.

On second thought, this comment follows up the one I left on Kaja's blog -- my stroop project is actually an improv from the standpoint is is free pieced and my own original design. SO I am linking in after all! (great pillow - thanks for the zipper link, too)

The rings on the selvages look wonderful. I sure have a lot of selvages and am looking for ideas. Thanks for the zipper tutorial link. I've only made pillows with overlapping fabric backs.

So pleased to see a post again from you Ann. I have posted the start of my Gwennie Inspired Medallion, possibly more in the category of liberated rather than true improv!

Again I think maybe I should start saving selvages instead of sticking them in my quilts. And thank you for the link - I am rubbish at zips!

So glad to see you here posting Ann. I hope the difficulties are coming to an end in a good way.
I love how your pillow turned out! It looks so cushy too. Love hidden zippers so thanks for the link to ChrissieD's tute. And yes, I was following Kaja's lighthouse adventure - so amazing!

We're so glad you included your current work. Let's not stand too much on classification here. Utility or improvisational or free-pieced or free-cut are always good. Definitely anything that is the maker's original design.
Chrissie has detailed instructions on making an entire pillow. I just use the zipper part. But I love the way it turns out. It's so nice to install a zipper first.
Thanks for linking with AHIQ.

Thanks, Cathy. The rings are leftovers from my Polka Dot or Freddy Dot Com quilt. I'm trying to force myself to quit saving selvedges. Originally it seemed there would never be enough; now there are way too many. But... they make great pillow backgrounds.
I always made pillows with overlapping backs, too. But the placket (and fabric change) enticed me to try this one. Now it's my favorite.

Ooo. Aaah. I so wanted to join this medallion group. Then my world fell apart. Now there may be time for catch-up reading. It will be a treat to see what everyone else has been doing. Thanks for linking it with AHIQ!

Do you remember the old joke, "If you have all the feathers you can hold, can you hold another?" Selvedges are the same way. If you're a Star Trek fan, you could think of them as Tribbles.
This is my favorite way to make a pillow. No buttons for a baby to swallow and a decorative back when it gets tossed around.

It's good to come up for air. One more funeral.
This pillow turned out so cute! Thanks for the new applique method. It made this possible. I sewed the selvedges to batting and backing first. Without your method, I would have had to zigzag very widely to hold the circles. And they wouldn't have held long anyway.
Good to be back in touch, Lara!

Wanted to link up, but my improv. is mostly in my head right now.:) Hope your difficult summer is getting easier. I'm wondering what the planets have been up to, throwing so many of us out of our comfortable groove...
